The Wednesday Afternoon Project

Wednesday afternoons are a wonderful thing in the Sixth Form...
Picture the scene - no lessons are time-tabled, you're given time to build up relationships with your fellow students and there are lots of opportunites to develop skills and gain qualifications which will assist you in later life. What more could you possibly want from a Wednesday Afternoon?

Work Experience

An opportunity to gain valuable experience in the work environment. A wide range of placements will be available 2pm - 5pm on Wednesday Afternoons. Thinking of becoming a teacher? Solicitor? Vet? Or Hairdresser? Here's your chance to find out first hand what it's really like...

Holiday Rep Training

This self-stufy course will give you all the skills and qualifications needed to become a holiday rep. The course is delivered and managed online and support is given every step of the way. Wouldn't it be fantastic to be able to work as a holiday rep after college?

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award

This is a programme of personal and social development. It incorporates many different aspects, such as service, skills, physical recreation, expeditions and the possibility of a residential project. This is a widely recognised scheme and is looked upon very highly by universities; it is both challenging and very rewarding.

Community Sport Leader's Award

This course will give you the skills and qualifications needed to organise a sports event for other people. There is an exciting opportunity to run your own business (and make money!) in this activity, either after school on Monday nights or Summer 2010.

Denes Enterprise

You will be given a pot of money to set up and run your very own business at the school. Selling stationary in the library? Washing cars? Taking responsibility for the new sixth-form kitchen? The choice is entirely yours! Will you be able to make a profit?

School Newspaper

Have you got something to offer the new school newspaper? Students with particular skills in writing, art, photography, editing or interviewing are needed to join the team. This would be a great project if you are thinking of a career in journalism, or even if you would just like to try something different.

Self-generated Activity

Think you could come up with your own ideas for a Wednesday Afternoon Project? Go on then! You will need to collect an application pack from Mr Papageorgiou. As long as you've got at least six people in your group, and you have thoroughly considered all aspects of your proposal, your activity will be approved!

Life Skills

What do you know about mortgages, credit cards, healthy-eating, the law, sex, or drugs? Want to know more? This activity is structured in such a way as to help you learn more about these important topics. As part of this project you will be expected to plan and deliver a presentation to educate your peers. This could include Powerpoint presentations, leaflets, posters or even a play! The choice is endless and entirely yours!

Credit Union

This is chance for you to become involved with the running of a social enterprise at The Aspire Centre. The idea of this project is to make credit union services easily accessible to students, parents and all within the "Denes community". Have you got the attributes that the current student members of The Credit Union are looking for?

Breakfast Clubs

This is an ideal opportunity for any student who is thinking about teaching as a career. Wednesday afternoons will be used to plan resources for a breakfast club in either Maths, English or Science. You will be expected to attend the club one morning a week for a short period of time, but will be paid for your efforts!
